Īfter collecting the evidence to a crime scene involving a murdered ATF agent who was working undercover, Calleigh is run off the road into a canal, corrupting her evidence. There, Horatio reunites with Yelina and learns that his brother Raymond is in too deep undercover in a drug ring. We can dream, right? Extras for this set also include five audio commentaries and a demo game for CSI: Hard Evidence.In Rio, Horatio and Delko are close to catching Riaz, Marisol's killer. Next season, hopefully we'll see a montage of Caruso's Horatio putting his glasses on emphatically in the opening of each show. There are several small features similar to the "Dressing" one, focusing on the Special F/X makeup, and the overall look of the show. We learned in the feature "Dressing the Part" how the characters clothes have gotten sexier this season, so it seems they're on the right path. If this show could just go one step further and embraces its campiness, it would be sublime. The music and the video fit well into the overall tone of the show, and the use of popular and classic rock music adds to that modern vibe. When it airs live, it probably fits well with the sound of commercials, but it could use some evening out for the DVDs.
The audio is decent it sounds good, but the music comes on a bit loud, which is jarring. It really feels like you're watching Miami, although the show is mainly filmed in Los Angeles. It actually looks superb, with many vibrant colors and a sharp, clear picture. Other cast regulars include Emily Proctor as Calleigh Duquesne, a ballistics specialist, Adam Rodriguez as Eric Delko, a fingerprint and drug identifier, Jonathan Togo as Ryan Wolfe, and Khandi Alexander as Dr. We also get more back story on relative newcomer to the team, Natalia (Eva LaRue), when a crime-of-the-week involves one of her family. Conflicts arise within the team, and eventually one of their own is in the line of fire, leaving the others to figure out what's really going on.
This season also includes several "ripped from the headlines" storylines, based on whatever the tabloid headlines were screaming that month. Caruso plays Head Investigator Lieutenant Horatio Caine, leading a team of forensics experts. In standard CSI formula, the show has the main characters in the Miami-Dade Police Department, and we know relatively little of their personal lives. Caruso's unique delivery and the reliable way he uses his sunglasses for emphasis have brought him and CSI: Miami into the pop culture lexicon. The Miami spin-off has two things going for it: the beauty of the scenery, and David Caruso. As far as formulaic episodic crime shows go, the CSI franchise leads the pack. In other Miami DVD releases, the fifth season of CSI: Miami was released this week, as well.
